Why Batman: Arkham Knight Is My Frontrunner for Game Of The Year

I am going to be upfront with you right now. I am as big of a Batman fan as there is, so this article might be a little biased. While there are plenty of potentially great games coming out this years such as halo 5, MGS5 and Bloodborne which just released to great review scores. I believe that even with all these obstacles to overcome to win game of the year Batman: Arkham Knight will succeed.

Since the 1980’s developers have been making Batman video games and none of them have lived up to the name. After the disaster that was Batman Begins the video game I had given up on ever seeing a good Batman game. That all changed when Rocksteady Studios decided to make Batman Arkham: Asylum. It came out of nowhere and completely blew away my expectations, not only for what a Batman game could be but for superhero games overall. After that came Batman: Arkham City which somehow even out did the original by expanding on the games previous ideas and implementing them on a bigger scale. Both of these games had metacritic scores over a 90 which very few games have reached. While both games have garnered great scores, the game of the year award has eluded both titles at the Video Game Awards. While the game does have very tough competition for game of the year honors here are some reasons why I think it will win.

Batman: Arkham Knight is really going all in on its final release in the Batman Arkham series. First off Gotham city has gotten even bigger this time around, how big you ask? It will be five times the size of the Arkham City game which in its own right was huge. While it seems like going five times bigger might be too much space, they decided to make it a little easier to traverse by letting you drive around in the batmobile. The batmobile is easily my favorite thing they have shown so far for the game. From the transition animation of you getting into the vehicle to gun combat mechanics everything looks incredibly fluid. I know some might be worried why does the batmobile have guns on it batman doesn’t kill people. The guns shoot non lethal rounds so batman doesn’t kill anybody and the vehicles the batmobile blows up are unmanned. From all the gameplay I have seen the batmobile seems to be the most fun you will have in a Arkham game yet.

Now what is a great batman game without all the great villains the batman universe is know for. So far confirmed for the game are Two Face, Harley Quinn, Hush, Penguin, Poison Ivy, Riddler, Arkham Knight and Scarecrow. All of these characters have been in previous Arkham games except the Arkham Knight. Scarecrow will be taking over as the main bad guy for the game which I think is a great choice. Some of the best parts from Arkahm Asylum involved the Scarecrow and I look forward to him taking over the big boss mantle.

The big question when it comes to the villains is the Arkham Knight and how big of a role will he play in the game. First off for those that are not as familiar with Batman lore, the Arham Knight is a character that was made by Rocksteady Studios for this game. So we have no idea about where he came from who he is or what his plans are for Arkham. All we really know is that he has an army of minions and wants to kill off batman. Seeing is how the game is named partially after him you would think he has a big stake in the game. For all we know he could end up being the main villain and overshadow Scarecrow. I am glad they have left him as more of a mystery character and hope Rocksteady doesn’t give away any more secretes about him until the game releases.

While quite a few things regarding the game are still a mystery there is one thing for certain this game will be polished. Arkham Knight was supposed to release back in 2014 but has been delayed twice and pushed back to June 23rd. While many fans were upset the about the delay while at first I was too. But in the end I would rather they delay it so we get the best version of the game than one that is rushed and full of bugs. All in all I could not be more excited for this game. For any batman fans out there who haven’t played the Arkham series you will not want to miss out on this game.

What do you think will be this years GOTY? Do you agree or disagree with the Arkham Knight prediction? We want to know! So let us know in the comments section below.

Have your say!

  1. I really want jc3 to win it and I laughed when you said arkham city was huge. I secretly want battlefront to win but I know deep down in my heart that its gonna turn out to be a freemium game that isn’t free that is being sponsored by the devil. The American Devil that is with accursed initials of, “E”, “A”.

    • CD Projekt Red might have something to say about those nominations..

  2. Batman isn’t even a contender if you look at the quality of the other AAA games like Witcher 3 and Metal gear solid 5. Batman is more of the same in an open world with no bossfights and a bat-car/tank. I feel embarrassed for the writer. It’s not too late to delete it..
