Why Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain Deserves The Critical Acclaim

There has been discussion around the release of Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain as to whether or not it is a good final entry in the Metal Gear franchise. Metal gear solid 5 has received a very good critical reception with a metacritic score of 95% however some fans of the series still feel that the game is a disappointment.

Reasons for the positive reviews include entirely player driven gameplay with many different ways to approach a mission and the mother base system where the player has options and can choose how to develop the new diamond dogs. Additionally online features player vs player element forward operating base and metal gear online 3 to be released January 2016 will provide additional depth for the player to explore.

Despite this depth there is still a view The Phantom Pain falls shorts of what could have been done story telling wise and the removal of some classic metal gear elements which does mean that Metal Gear Solid 5 is a different Metal Gear game. The game seems to focus on the player experience and the open world. The player can no longer listen to codec conversations to find extra story details instead the story is now told through cassette tapes and additional information is provided by correspondent at mother base that talks at the player, the story is also simplistic and there a fewer cut scenes with the different direction taken with The Phantom Pain. Personally I feel that MGS5 is still a very good Metal Gear game, I found the story to be exciting and that it also provided a good explanation to some of the questions of what went on before Solid Snakes arrival.

There is no doubt that MGS5 is very different to the other games in the series. I can understand that fans feel the story falls short of what potentially what could have been done but Metal Gear Solid 5 is still a very immersive game to play and provides an exceptional amount of content: Side Ops, The Mother base to develop and the story to complete as well as the forward operating base all before Metal Gear Online 3 is included lead to a game with a lot for players to do before the next anticipated game is released.

What do you guys think? Does MGS V deserve the high scoring reviews or not? Let us know in the comment section below.

  1. I am sure that this game is true to the franchise and the game play and AI is excellent but the story in itself it is muddled and has tried to squeeze in as many genres as possible which make those unfamiliar with the franchise just say WTF! There is alot of nostalgia from fan boys as this is supposed to be the last one and it is this that has allowed the game to be such a sucess. The graphics are good but could of been better and the ‘open world’ tag is a little generous. GTA5 it ain’t!
