Earlier this month Microsoft announced that it would be closing down Lionhead Studios, the developers behind the Fable series. And shortly afterward it was reported that Sony was trying to hire some Lionhead employees right away, and in a surprise announcement that Sony will be closing Evolution Studios. Here’s what Sony had to say on this matter:
Regular reviews take place throughout SCE Worldwide Studios, ensuring that the resources that we have in such a competitive landscape can create and produce high quality, innovative and commercially viable projects.
As part of this process we have reviewed and assessed all current projects and plans for the short and medium term and have decided to make some changes to the European studios structure.
As a result, it has been decided that Evolution Studio will close.
It is regrettable that this decision will lead to compulsory redundancies. We accept that this decision will mean that we risk losing high calibre staff but by focusing on other Studios that already have exciting new projects in development we believe we will be in a stronger position going forward and able to offer the best possible content of the highest quality for our consumers.
Where possible we will try to reallocate people onto other projects. If appropriate opportunities are not possible within the company, we will assist staff in any way we can, including speaking with local employers and with other development companies.
Evolution has been an important part of SCE Worldwide Studios for over 10 years – working on ground-breaking racing titles like WRC, Motorstorm and DRIVECLUB.
This decision should not take anything away from the great work that Evolution has produced.
So it makes me wonder if Microsoft should take a page out of Sony’s playbook and hire Evolution employees? So here I am writing my thoughts on why Microsoft should pick up Evolution Studios. Now, one of the biggest reasons as to why I think that Microsoft should start trying to hire employees from Evolution Studios is because they’re a strong background in racing games, which can really help the Forza series (not that it needs much help) and who knows? It might even help pave the way for an entirely new branch of games for Forza, much like how Forza Horizon has helped the franchise. It makes the most sense as to where those who worked for Evolution Studios would be working on given their history of racing games.
Another reason that they should pick up Evolution Studios is to possibly create something entirely new in the racing genre of gaming. A whole new franchise that’s not connected to the Forza series at all. Then they would have potentially two main racing series in their arsenal. Evolution Studios had a small number of employees, about forty to sixty is all. And if they pick up the majority of them, they can create more games in the style of the other series that they worked on. Even if they only get a handful of employees from Evolution Studios, they will have a heap of new talent in their pockets to put towards future games.
Some have said that it almost seems to be planned that both Lionsgate Studios and Evolution Studios to both close down so close in time to one another, I personally feel like it’s just coincidence. Either way, I feel that Microsoft needs to react quickly to this news, in order to capitalize on this. What do you think of Sony closing down Evolution Studios? What was your favorite game that they made? (mines easily going to be Motorstorm) Please let us know what you think in the comments below!
