Why Activision Shouldn’t Force Players To Buy Infinite Warfare To Play Modern Warfare Remastered

This past Monday Activision official confirmed that Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare will be launching this Holiday. They also announced that it would have a $80 Legacy Edition that would come bundled with Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare Remastered which was huge news. Call of Duty 4 is regarded by many as the best Call of Duty game and it’s really what made Call of Duty the juggernaut it is today. Then the bad news came out. Activision announced that the only way you can get Modern Warfare Remastered is to buy the $80 Legacy Edition or one of the more expensive versions meaning that it won’t be sold separately.

Now as you can imagine many players are not happy about this so we have to ask ourselves this: is it wrong of Activision to lock Call of Duty 4 Remastered behind that expensive paywall? In my opinion it kind of is. I personally have not played much of Call of Duty since Call of Duty Black Ops 2. I’ve played a little bit of some of the recent entries in the franchise but haven’t really found them appealing. This is the case for many other gamers as well as some of us are just tired of the futuristic stuff that the Call of Duty franchise has become known for. I would love to play Call of Duty 4 Remastered but do I really want to pay a minimum of $80 for it? No not really. Sure I might end up liking Infinite Warfare but I might not as well.

To me it almost seems like this is just a guaranteed way for Activision to get more sales on Infinite Warfare. It is being developed by Infinity Ward who originally created the Modern Warfare series but they lost a lot of talent since that time. The last Call of Duty Infinity Ward released was 2013’s Call of Duty: Ghosts which in many people’s opinions was the worst Call of Duty game. Some people may be wary of buying another Infinity Ward Call of Duty after what happened with Ghosts so what better way to convince people to buy it than by forcing them to if they want Modern Warfare Remastered. It’s pretty dirty for sure and hey maybe they are doing it because Infinite Warfare will turn out really good and they want people to trust Infinity Ward again but that still isn’t a good excuse. I see no reason why they can’t release Modern Warfare Remastered digitally for $20 or so.

The other reason Activision probably doesn’t want to release it separately is because they know many Call of Duty fans will just spend $20 and stick to Modern Warfare Remastered this Holiday rather than spend $60 or $80 on the new one. They would end up losing money in that respect. They don’t care if you own both and play Call of Duty 4 more than Infinite Warfare as they already got a good amount of money out of you. The more I think about it the more I think they are wrong to do this as every reason I can think of just comes off as Activision wanting to be greedy.

I sincerely hope that Activision changes their mind before the release of the game and decides to release Call of Duty 4 Remastered standalone but I won’t be getting my hopes up. I believe it is the right thing to do by their fans but it’s Activision we’re talking about. What about you? Do you think it is wrong of Activision to force you to buy an $80 version of Infinite Warfare if you want to play Call of Duty 4 Remastered? Do you plan to buy it anyway? 1. Don’t worry, you’ll be able to buy it for $40 as a download a month later.
