Overwatch Porn Being Removed With DMCA Takedown Notices

It’s no secret that most games will have a certain percentage of the fanbase who find it fun to dedicate some of their time to making pornography of the characters from their most favourable games – in this instance, Overwatch has come under the wings of the ‘artists’. There was a very well done and in-depth report from Kotaku a few days ago, however the main jist of it is that the pornography is in quite high demand, and people are making it. And there have been instances occurring throughout the internet where a presumed Blizzard employee is working to have each and every piece of porn taken down.

Line-up of the Overwatch heroes

Spornm, a Redditor and frequent Source Filmmaker, uses the tool to create such videos. He posted an image recently showing a message he’d received from a popular pornography content hosting site, PornHub, saying that his video had been removed due to an infringement notification being sent to the company. He said that another video – presumably of the same calibre – was taken down for the same reason. However, Spornm wasn’t the only member to have one of their videos taken down, as another user (who’s name we do not know) has also had their video removed after reports were sent to Gfycat.

Spornm’s received message from PornHub

PCGamesN pointed out that the Gfycat takedown didn’t come from Blizzard. It in fact came from Irdeto who are a company specialising in “digital platform security” who works with “pay-media operators, content creators, software application providers and connected device manufacturers to protect valuable digital assets.” There is a possibility that Irdeto took the initiative of taking the videos down without Blizzard’s prior knowledge, however the chances that Blizzard has contracted the company to do so seem higher, as these kind of things aren’t what you want on the internet.

There is no sudden reason for the removal of these sorts of things, but the Kotaku report indicated that some of the models that were used in the pornographic videos were taken directly from the game – giving Blizzard more of a reason to get the videos removed due to copyright infringement.

So, we’d like to hear from you in regards to the recent revelations. Do you think this is a pointless issue that Blizzard are taking too seriously, or do you think removing these kind of videos is a necessity for the video game community? Let us know down in the comments!
