Why The Last Guardian Delay Benefits the Game

If you missed the news this morning Sony has announced that The Last Guardian from Japan Studio has been delayed once again. Yes this can be disappointing news for some but the good news is it’s only about a 5-6 week delay. Instead of launching on October 25 the game will now launch on December 6. You can read the announcement post below.

The Last Guardian development team is fast approaching major milestones in production and has made the tough decision to delay the release of The Last Guardian a few weeks. The Last Guardian will launch on December 6, 2016.

Fumito Ueda, gen DESIGN and JAPAN Studio have a wonderful vision for The Last Guardian’s touching, emotional journey of friendship and trust, and we want to deliver the most polished experience possible for our fans who have supported us for so long. A delay is a difficult decision, particularly with this game, but we have encountered more bugs than anticipated while in the final stages of development. To ensure that The Last Guardian delivers on the experience that the game’s creators have envisioned, we need to take the extra time to work on those issues.

Our development continues to push itself to the fullest and we look forward to revealing new content toward launch.

We appreciate your continued support.

Now I want to touch on why I think this delay actually benefits the game and why I was actually hoping that it would happen. The Last Guardian was slated to launch on October 25 which put it in the middle of some serious competition. Games like Battlefield 1, Titanfall 2, Skyrim Remastered, and Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare are all launching around that time. While The Last Guardian is a major AAA game it doesn’t quite appeal to a wide audience like your typical FPS games and big RPG’s. Should it have launched on that day it’s sales would have suffered from it honestly. There will be too many people playing the new shooters at that time instead and I really think that is one reason Sony pushed it.

When you look at the games it will launch with now on December 6 they are no where near the same competition. Sure South Park: The Fractured But Whole has gotten a lot of praise but that game doesn’t appeal to a mass audience either. Exclusives like Dead Rising 4 and Gravity Rush 2 are also launching that day but again those are nowhere near the same competition as your major shooters are. The Last Guardian will now be able to launch and actually not be overshadowed. Smart move in my opinion. Of course should the game have really needed that time to fix some bugs like Sony says than it needed to be delayed as well.

While I know it is hard when a game gets delayed I truly think this time it was the right thing and the smart thing to do. ICO and Shadow of the Colossus were some of the best games of their time and The Last Guardian deserves every chance to succeed. Of course should the game get delayed again then it just starts to feel ridiculous. Hopefully this is the final one. Let us know in the comments how you feel about the most recent delay.

Have your say!
