Gears of War 4 is scheduled to be released in a little under a month. It’s been 5 years since our tour of Sera and fighting the Locust Horde. Being an exclusive release for Microsoft and Xbox – it was, in my opinion, the next best thing to the Halo series. Developer The Coalition will be taking a go at extending the Gears universe for a new generation. So why are we excited about Gears of War 4?
Taking place 25 years after the events of Gears of War 3, we encounter Gears of War main character Marcus Fenix’s son in a very different world. After the Locust and Lambent threat were eliminated, other effects happened. Fossil Fuels were destroyed, and weather changes sweep across the planet. Because the main source of energy has been eliminated, the COG (Coalition of Ordered Governments) has declared martial law, raised large walled in cities for protection, and taken control of the dwindling human population. This of course causes a split and a group of people, called the Outsiders, have elected to stay away from COG jurisdiction and live on their own, outside the city walls. We come across JD Fenix as a new threat arises.
Fan Favorites and More
Gears of War will be featuring similar Gears favorites including Horde Mode, Multiplayer and Co-Op. They will have new weapons and new executions including combat knife takedowns. Familiar favorites including weapons and finishing moves will be back. One of the exciting new features is the Play Anywhere option. Introduced at E3, the Play Anywhere function allows someone to start or play a game on your Xbox and continue to play on your Windows 10 PC. As long as you purchase the Digital Version, you don’t have to purchase the game twice. All of your saves/progress, achievements and add-ons all transfer over and come with you. This is a great added feature for those that travel, or want to be able to play on your PC games from your home base console.
A Brave New World
The transformed world of Sera should open up a new place for players to explore. Using the upgraded graphics and technology of current gen, we should get a fantastic look at new locations. The large cities should be a bustling urban environment, and the war torn ravaged countryside should a sight to see. We will get in touch with the next generation of soldiers, as we meet JD and his friends, and see how they will rely on the teachings of the elders to combat the eminent threat in this bold new world.
One off the wall thing I’m excited for is the soundtrack. Game of Thrones composer Ramin Djawadi has signed on to do the music for Gears 4. Music in games holds particular significance for me, as a certain song, or background music really adds to both the storytelling and general feel of games. It can get you excited, bring you to tears or even enhance your experience as a player. Anyone who watches Game of Thrones knows the main title screen almost instantly, and can attest that during episodes the feeling involved with great music propel the story along.
The excitement for the next Gears game is real, and right in our face.
The brand new game play shown just this morning adds to the fervor by showing us intense images, narrated by Marcus. I for one cannot wait to take up the ole chain wielding machine gun again as a new generation battles the upcoming threat on their homes. What are your thoughts and hopes for Gears?
