Ubisoft had started to go into a phase where they would release an Assassin’s Creed every year, except this year. For Ubisoft’s major release this year, we will be receiving Watch Dogs 2 in the fall and it’s is going to be under pressure to do well. With Ubisoft only releasing one AAA title this fall, all the pressure is going to be on Watch Dogs 2 because there isn’t going to be an Assassin’s Creed to essentially carry Watch Dogs 2. So will Watch Dogs 2 be able to handle the pressure it will receive this year?
Watch Dogs was a fairly big game at the time of it’s release, with a lot of advertisement from Ubisoft. However it didn’t really go down well with the reviews, with a lot of people giving it hate. So it would be no surprise to me if Watch Dogs 2 doesn’t get very many day one purchases. However, it is said that Ubisoft have corrected a lot of things where the first game failed. Ubisoft might be smart not releasing an Assassin’s Creed around the same time as Watch Dogs 2 is because when the original Watch Dogs was released, it affected the performance of the Assassin’s Creed’s released around that time.
This was because when Watch Dogs was released it directed most, if not all, of Ubisoft’s attention towards it, which affected Assassin’s Creed. Since Watch Dogs was a whole new concept it got Ubisoft more interested, and as most people would agree, Assassin’s Creed Unity and Black Flag were possibly the worst one’s they have released yet. This would be as their main focus would be their new game, Watch Dogs. The Assassin’s Creed series was one of Ubisoft’s biggest earning video game series. With them investing a lot of money this year into a new Watch Dogs instead of a new Assassin’s Creed could be very risky, due to the reviews and ratings that the first game received.
However, Watch Dogs 2 could follow a very similar pattern that Assassin’s Creed had. The first Assassin’s Creed only received mediocre reviews (just like Watch Dogs 1), but Ubisoft invested their money into the Assassin’s Creed series and the next game in the installment, and it became one of the biggest games in that franchise. It paid off so much, that Assassin’s Creed is now one of the biggest selling franchises out there in the gaming industry.
Watch Dogs has shown to us that it isn’t a proven series that can sell, and Ubisoft doesn’t really have any other huge titles for the rest of 2016. So this means that they are putting a lot of money and stock into Watch Dogs 2, hoping that it will be one of the biggest sellers of the fall of 2016, making them their money back that they have invested into it and more.
So the pressure that Watch Dogs 2 will have to go under at release is that a lot of people could compare it to Assassin’s Creed II because of the success that game had, to the success people hope Watch Dogs 2 will get. Will Watch Dogs 2 be the sequel that makes the series a huge success to Ubisoft, or will it be the death of the series because of the pressure that Ubisoft is putting it under?
