Released back in 2012, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive quickly rose to be one of the biggest games played on a number of different platforms, still being played to this date by millions every year. The series itself has always been a huge success with professional groups of players competing every year for large sums of prize money, and with the addition of competitive mode on Global Offensive it has allowed players around the world to play together in order to work towards one of 18 ranks to be displayed.

During the Arms Deal update of August 2013, the addition of cosmetic skins that could be applied to weapons was introduced. There is a rarity scale amongst other factors that would enhance or decrease the desirability of the skins, which were quickly used as a virtual currency for the game – allowing many skin betting and trading websites to be created using the Steamworks API.

While these major gaming events occur, bookmakers allow viewers to place their bet on who they believe will win, get the most kills, assists and so on for money or skins that could be used for the weapons that had an equal amount to the desired bet. Many players have intentions of getting to the level of these professionals, as the prize sums that the teams gain are increasing as the year’s progress, starting at $250,000 in 2013 to reach $1,000,000 in 2016.

There has been some controversy surrounding betting and gambling through Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, however, with two formal lawsuits being filed against these bookmakers and Valve directly, the publishing developer of the series. The problem being that these websites encouraged underage users to bet and gamble through the bookmakers while streamers and popular YouTubers were advertising the websites without acknowledging the fact that they owned the site, resulting in several of the sites being shut down.
