June 2017 is almost here and now that both Microsoft and Sony have announced what games you’ll be getting for free via Games With Gold and PlayStation Plus it’s time to look at which is offering the better value for gamers. As always we’ll look at several different areas and compare them such as the price value, how well the games were received by press, and how old the games are. Keep in mind this is just our opinion on which is better for the month as every person has different tastes and may like certain games better than others. Our previous five months of this year have seen PlayStation Plus and Games With Gold tied with a 2-2-1 right now. Which one is going to break the tie in June?
Games With Gold Price Values
Games With Gold in June 2017 is offering 4 games as always. Two Xbox One games and two Xbox 360 games which are also playable on Xbox One. On Xbox One you’re getting Speedrunners and Watch Dogs. On Xbox 360 you’re getting Assassin’s Creed 3 and Dragon Age Origins. Now in terms of value let’s take a look at what each game is worth.
SpeedRunners – $9.99
Watch Dogs – $29.99
Assassin’s Creed 3 – $19.99
Dragon Age Origins – $14.99
Total Value: $75
So for the sixth month of 2017 you are getting right at $75 in value in free games with Games With Gold. Now I do want to mention a few things. As always that is only the value of the games digitally as some of these can be obtained cheaper at retail and digital prices are sometimes higher than what you would normally find the games for. Overall not a bad month as you are getting a brand new indie game and some pretty good AAA games even though they are quite old. Now let’s look at PlayStation Plus.
PlayStation Plus Price Values
As usual you get six free games this month with two on PS4, two on PS3, and two on PS Vita. Once again though the two Vita titles are Cross-Buy with the PS4 so you get four free games on PS4 this month. On PS4 you get Life is Strange and Killing Floor 2. On PS3 both Abyss Odyssey and WRC 5 are free and on Vita both Neon Chrome and Spy Chameleon are free and Cross-Buy on PS4. Now let’s look at the values.
Life is Strange – $19.99
Killing Floor 2 – $39.99
Abyss Odyssey – $14.99
WRC 5 – $39.99
Neon Chrome – $14.99
Spy Chameleon – $4.99
Total Value: $135
So PlayStation Plus in June is giving you $135 worth of free games. This is another incredible month for value for Plus members as you are getting over twice as much value in games as you would spend on an entire year of PlayStation Plus. The biggest contributors here are Killing Floor 2 and WRC 5 but several of the other games are worth a lot too. This is one of the best months in 2017 yet for sure.
So when looking at the value of both services in June PlayStation Plus blows Games with Gold away with a $135-$75 win comparison. Two of the free Plus games are worth as much as the entire Games with Gold lineup this month. Once again both are still giving you more than what you pay a year for the services so there is that.
Price Value Winner: PlayStation Plus
Now we have looked at what each service is giving you in terms of money value but are the games any good? In this area we are going to look at how each game was received critically and see which lineup comes out on top. I’ll be using Metacritic to pull the scores from and for multiplatform games I will use the platform that had the most review scores. However for games that only have scores of a PC version I will not use them as PC versions can differ greatly from console versions.
Games With Gold Scores:
SpeedRunners – 70
Watch Dogs – 80
Assassin’s Creed 3 – 84
Dragon Age: Origins – 86
Review Average – 80
So looking at the Games with Gold lineup you are getting some pretty good games once again this month. Three of the games have an average in the 80’s while the brand new Speedrunners has a 70 currently on Xbox One bringing the overall average down to an 80. Once again another solid month in this category for Games With Gold. Now let’s look at PlayStation Plus.
PlayStation Plus Scores
Life is Strange – 85
Killing Floor 2 – 75
Abyss Odyssey – 70
WRC 5 – 62
Neon Chrome – 63
Spy Chameleon – 71
Review Average – 71
PlayStation Plus in June comes in with a 71 average overall which is a good score. Now this isn’t quite as bad as some of the past few months where the PS3 games had terrible scores and brought the average down a lot. Both of the PS4 offerings are great with an 85 and a 75 for the other one. The PS3 and Vita games were a bit lower again and thus bring the average down a lot because of it. So far this year PS+ has had a 74, 72, 76,63 and 70 so June improves on last month with a 71 but is still one of the lower months of the year. If you are just looking at the PS4 games however it’s a pretty good month.
When comparing both, Games With Gold walks away with a 9 point win in this area this month. It always is a little bit unfair in this area for PlayStation Plus though as they typically have two more games than Games with Gold does and that means the average is always factored different. The same can be said about Games With Gold in the value area though as PS+ has more games so the value has a better chance of being higher. As always it is up to the gamer to decide how much they like each game.
Review Score Winner – Games With Gold
Third Round: Game Newness
Once again we will be looking at and comparing how new are the games that each service is offering. Some gamers prefer to get newer games versus older games so we like to look at when each of these games came out and see which is better in this area.
Games With Gold Release Dates:
SpeedRunners – June 1, 2017
Watch Dogs – May 27, 2014
Assassin’s Creed 3 – October 30, 2012
Dragon Age: Origins – November 3, 2009
Looking at the Games With Gold lineup you are getting a brand new game in SpeedRunners, Watch Dogs which is three years old, Assassin’s Creed 3 which is almost five years old and Dragon Age: Origins which is almost eight years old.
Life is Strange – October 20, 2015
Killing Floor 2 – November 16, 2016
Abyss Odyssey – July 15, 2014
WRC 5 – October 13, 2015
Neon Chrome – May 31, 2016
Spy Chameleon – July 21, 2016
Looking at the PS+ lineup you are getting Life is Strange that is almost two years old, Killing Floor 2 that is around seven months old, Abyss Odyssey that is almost three years old, WRC 5 that is almost two years old, Neon Chrome that is exactly one year old and Spy Chameleon that is almost one year old.
So when comparing both lineups Sony continues to win this area month after month with another victory in June. They just seem to give newer games when compared to Games with Gold which I appreciate because there is a greater chance that you haven’t played them. No game is older than three years old on PlayStation Plus where Games with Gold continues to give games that are seven or more years old. Again this area might not mean anything to you but some gamers like getting newer games for free and PlayStation Plus continues to be the leader in this area having won all six months of this year.
Game Newness Winner – PlayStation Plus
So in June 2017 PlayStation Plus comes out as the better offering with a 2-1 win over Games with Gold. It has far better value this month and continues to offer newer games like it has done all year long. All of this doesn’t really mean anything though and as always it’s up to each gamer to decide which lineup is better to them. You may not like certain genres or you may have already played some of the games thus making a lineup less appealing to you. Be sure to let us know in the comments which lineup you like better in June.
Overall Winner: PlayStation Plus
