PlayStation Plus vs. Games With Gold – Which Is Better? June 2018 Edition

gameswithgold

June is almost here and now that both Microsoft and Sony have announced their free games lineup for the month via Games With Gold and PlayStation Plus it’s time to look at which is offering the better value for gamers. As always we’ll look at several different areas and compare them such as the price value, how well the games were received by press, and how old the games are.

Keep in mind this is just our opinion on which is better for the month as every person has different tastes and may like certain games better than others. Which is better in June? Let’s find out.

Games With Gold Price Values

Games With Gold in June 2018 is offering 4 games as always. Two Xbox One games and two Xbox 360 games which are also playable on Xbox One. Let me just get it out of the way and say that this month you are only getting three games actually. That’s because for some reason Microsoft thought it would be a good idea to replace one of the Xbox One games with a DLC pack for a free to play game. I’m talking about a pack for Smite of course. Other than that Assassin’s Creed Chronicles: Russia is free on Xbox One while Sonic All Stars Racing Transformed and Lego Indiana Jones 2 are free on Xbox 360. Now in terms of value let’s take a look at what each game is worth.

Assassin’s Creed Chronicles: Russia – $9.99

Smite GOLD Bundle – $99.99

Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed – $29.99

Lego Indiana Jones 2: The Adventure Continues – $19.99

Total Value: $160

So for the sixth month of 2018 you are getting $160 in value in free games with Games With Gold. The biggest value here is the Gold bundle for Smite. I’m just going to say that I really don’t want to count this this month because it’s not a free game but merely micro transaction content that you can buy for it. For that reason I’m going to classify the value this month at $60 in free games. This kind of trend needs to start and end this month as it’s not acceptable to lose a free game for this DLC. Now let’s look at the PlayStation Plus lineup.

PlayStation Plus Price Values

In June, PlayStation Plus members are getting 6 games for free. On the PS4 we are getting XCOM 2 and Trials Fusion. On the PS3 both Zombie Driver HD and Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon: Future Soldier are free. Squares and Atomic Ninja are both free on the PlayStation Vita and round out the lineup. Now let’s look at the price values.

XCOM 2– $59.99

Trials Fusion – $19.99

Zombie Driver HD – $14.99

Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon: Future Soldier – $19.99

Squares – $4.99

Atomic Ninja – $9.99

Total Value: $130

So for the sixth month of 2018 you are getting a total of $130 in value. This is yet another month where you are getting at or over $100 worth of value in free games. XCOM 2 is the most valuable here at it’s still a $60 on PSN. The PS3 games are actually pretty decent this month too. The Vita games though continue to be very cheap indie games.  It’s yet another solid month for the PlayStation Plus service.

So when comparing both services in the Value category I’m giving the edge to PlayStation Plus. Yes Games with Gold would be higher if you count the DLC pack but since they decided to omit a free game this month and give us that instead I’m holding it against them. As it stands it’s a $130-$60 comparison with PlayStation Plus as the leader in free games this month. Both services continue to give you more in a single month than you pay for a whole year though so you’re not going wrong either way.

Price Value Winner: PlayStation Plus

Now we have looked at what each service is giving you in terms of money value but are the games any good? In this area we are going to look at how each game was received critically and see which lineup comes out on top. I’ll be using Metacritic to pull the scores from and for multiplatform games I will use the platform that had the most review scores. However for games that only have scores of a PC version I will not use them as PC versions can differ greatly from console versions.

Games with Gold Scores

Assassin’s Creed Chronicles: Russia – 62

Smite GOLD Bundle – 80

Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed – 82

Lego Indiana Jones 2: The Adventure Continues – 71

Review Average – 73

So looking at the Games with Gold lineup you end up with an 74 average which is a lot lower than last month and one of their lowest in awhile. The best rated games here are Smite and Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed with an 80 and 82. Lego Indiana Jones 2 follows with a 71 and Assassin’s Creed Chronicles: Russia is the lowest with a 62. Now let’s look at the PlayStation Plus lineup.

PlayStation Plus Scores:

XCOM 2– 87

Trials Fusion – 79

Zombie Driver HD – 64

Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon: Future Soldier – 79

Squares – 67

Atomic Ninja – 61

Review Average – 73

So looking at the PlayStation Plus lineup you end up with a 73 average which is better than last month. As an overall lineup this is a better month than usual. There are no titles here that scored below a 60 which is a change as the PS3 titles lately have been really bad. Instead we get XCOM 2 which is one of the highest rated games of this gen with an 87. Trials Fusion and Ghost Recon Future Soldier are both good with a 79. The other three all scored in the 60’s.

So looking at both lineups they end up in a tie this month with a 73 for both. Both lineups have some good games so you can’t go wrong with either. Again it’s up to each individual to decide what games appeal more to them.

Review Score Winner – Tie

Third Round: Game Newness

Once again we will be looking at and comparing how new are the games that each service is offering. Some gamers prefer to get newer games versus older games so we like to look at when each of these games came out and see which is better in this area.

Assassin’s Creed Chronicles: Russia – February 9, 2016

Smite GOLD Bundle – August 19, 2015

Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed – November 18, 2012

Lego Indiana Jones 2: The Adventure Continues – November 17, 2009

Looking at the Games with Gold lineup you have a two year old game and a three year old game on Xbox One. On Xbox 360 you have a six year old game and a nine year old game. Now let’s look at the PlayStation Plus lineup.

XCOM 2– September 27, 2016

Trials Fusion – April 15, 2014

Zombie Driver HD – December 18, 2012

Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon: Future Soldier – May 22, 2012

Squares – July 21, 2015

Atomic Ninja – October 8, 2013

Looking at the PlayStation Plus lineup, you have an almost two year old game and a four year old game on PS4. On the PS3 you have two six year old games. On the Vita you have a three year old game and a five year old game.

So when comparing both lineups PlayStation Plus comes out as the winner. They have no games older than six years while the Games with Gold lineup has a nine year old game included. Both are pretty similar though when looking at the rest. Again this area might not mean anything to you but some gamers like getting newer games for free as there is a lesser chance that they have played them.

Game Newness Winner – PlayStation Plus

So for the sixth month of 2018 PlayStation Plus comes out as the overall winner with a 2-1 win over Games with Gold in the compared areas. All of this doesn’t really mean anything though and as always it’s up to each gamer to decide which lineup is better for their individual tastes. Be sure to let us know in the comments which lineup you like better in June.

Overall Winner: PlayStation Plus
