2018 is winding down and now that Sony and Microsoft have announced their free game lineups for the month of November, it’s time to look at which is offering the better value for gamers. As always we’ll look at several different areas and compare them such as the price value, how well the games were received by critics, and how old the games are.
Keep in mind this is just our opinion on which is better for the month as every person has different tastes and may like certain games better than others. Which is better in November? Let’s find out.
Games With Gold Price Values
Games with Gold is offering four titles as always with two on Xbox One and two on Xbox 360. Battlefield 1 and Race the Sun are your free Xbox One games this month. Assassin’s Creed and Dante’s Inferno are your free Xbox 360 games. As always you can play the Xbox 360 games on your Xbox One thanks to backward compatibility. Now let’s look at what the games are worth.
Battlefield 1 – $39.99
Race the Sun – $9.99
Assassin’s Creed – $19.99
Dante’s Inferno – $14.99
Total Value: $85
So looking at the lineup you get $85 worth of free games in November which is up from the $72 in October. Battlefield 1 alone contributes half of the overall value but the Xbox 360 titles offer good value as well. Now let’s look at the PlayStation Plus lineup.
PlayStation Plus Price Values
In November, PlayStation Plus members are getting 6 games for free. On the PlayStation 4, you are getting both Bulletstorm: Full Clip Edition and Yakuza Kiwami. On the PlayStation 3, both The Jackbox Party Pack 2 and Arkedo Series are free. Burly Men at Sea and Roundabout are the free Vita games and round out the lineup. Both of those Vita games are also Cross-Buy on the PS4. Now let’s look at the price values.
Yakuza Kiwami – $19.99
Bulletstorm: Full Clip Edition – $39.99
The Jackbox Party Pack 2 – $24.99
The Arkedo Series – $5.99
Burly Men at Sea – $9.99
Roundabout – $9.99
Total Value: $111
So for the eleventh month of 2018 you are getting a total of $111 in value which is up from the $102 you got in October. Bulletstorm: Full Clip Edition is the highest here with a $40 but Yakuza Kiwami and Jackbox Party Pack 2 add a lot as well. Overall it’s yet another month over $100 which is something PlayStation Plus has been offering for awhile now.
So when comparing both lineups, PlayStation Plus wins with a $111-$85 difference. Regardless, you’re getting more value this month on both services than what a year of membership costs so it’s a win for both services.
Price Value Winner: PlayStation Plus
Now we have looked at what each service is giving you in terms of money value but are the games any good? In this area we are going to look at how each game was received critically and see which lineup comes out on top. I’ll be using Metacritic to pull the scores from and for multiplatform games I will use the platform that had the most review scores. However for games that only have scores of a PC version I will not use them as PC versions can differ greatly from console versions.
Games with Gold Scores
Battlefield 1 – 87
Race the Sun – 76
Assassin’s Creed – 81
Dante’s Inferno – 73
Review Average – 79
So looking at the Games with Gold lineup you end up with an 79 average score between the titles which is one point higher than the average last month. All of the games scored pretty well Battlefield 1 being the highest with a great 87 score from critics. Dante’s Inferno was the lowest with a 73 but that is still viewed as a good score. Now let’s look at the PlayStation Plus lineup.
PlayStation Plus Scores:
Yakuza Kiwami – 80
Bulletstorm: Full Clip Edition – 75
The Jackbox Party Pack 2 – 71
The Arkedo Series – ?
Burly Men at Sea – 82
Roundabout – 74
Review Average – 76
So looking at the PlayStation Plus lineup you end up with a 76 average which is up from the 71 average the lineup had in October. All of the games scored in the 7 or 8 range which is an improvement from last month when we had some games in the 6 range. Arkedo Series was not factored into the average though as I couldn’t find any reviews for this title. Overall it’s a pretty solid lineup of games.
So when comparing both lineups in November, Games with Gold comes out better with a 79-76 win. In this area Games with Gold usually has an advantage regardless due to there being more games on PlayStation Plus which usually results in a lower average. The same can be said in the value category however. Either way both lineups offer some good games this month and it’s up to the gamer to decide which games look more interesting to them.
Review Score Winner –
Third Round: Game Newness
Once again we will be looking at and comparing how new are the games that each service is offering. Some gamers prefer to get newer games versus older games so we like to look at when each of these games came out and see which is better in this area.
Battlefield 1 – October 18, 2016
Race the Sun – April 21, 2017
Assassin’s Creed – November 13, 2007
Dante’s Inferno – February 9, 2010
So looking at the Games with Gold lineup we have one game around a year and half old, one game that is two years old, one game that is almost nine years old, and one game that is eleven years old. Now let’s look at the PlayStation Plus lineup.
Yakuza Kiwami – August 29, 2017
Bulletstorm: Full Clip Edition – April 7, 2017
The Jackbox Party Pack 2 – October 13, 2015
The Arkedo Series – October 16, 2012
Burly Men at Sea – September 19, 2017
Roundabout – June 26, 2018
Looking at the PlayStation Plus lineup, you have 3 games that are a little over a year old, one game that is five months old, one game that is three years old and one game that is six years old.
So when comparing both lineups, PlayStation Plus comes out as the winner. The PlayStation Plus lineup has four games that range from a few months to just over a year old while the oldest title is six years old. Games with Gold’s newest title is a year and a half old and they have two titles that are eight and eleven years old. Again this area might not mean anything to you but some gamers like getting newer games for free as there is a lesser chance that they have played them.
Game Newness Winner –PlayStation Plus
So for the eleventh month of 2018, PlayStation Plus comes out as the overall winner with a 2-1 win over Games with Gold in the compared areas. PlayStation Plus wins in the Value and Game Newness categories while Games with Gold won in the Score category. All of this doesn’t really mean anything though and as always it’s up to each gamer to decide which lineup is better for their individual tastes. Be sure to let us know in the comments which lineup you like better in November.
