January 2019 NPD: Nintendo Switch Tops Hardware While Kingdom Hearts 3 Leads Software Sales

The NPD Group has released their data for the US video game sales industry for the month of January 2019. While January saw some big game releases but it wasn’t enough to prevent industry spending from dropping year-on-year.

Total spending for the month was $893 million which is down 19% from $1,101 million in January 2018. Hardware sales were $199 million which is down 28% from $278 million last year. PC and console software amounted to $427 million which is down 18% from $520 million. Finally, accessories spending came out to be $267 million which is down 12% from $303 million.

While these are big drops from last year this January was still the second highest market total for this particular month since January 2013. In terms of Hardware the Nintendo Switch was the best selling and highest grossing console in sales in January in the US. It was also the only console that saw year-on-year growth.

There were several big new game releases in January and almost all of them did very well. Kingdom Hearts III was the best selling game in January. Total launch month dollar sales for the game were 2.5x that of the previous best game in the franchise Kingdom Hearts II which released on the PlayStation 2 in March 2006. It was also the second best opening month in Square Enix history trailing only Final Fantasy XV.

Resident Evil 2 was the second best selling game of the month and had more than 2.8x higher dollar sales than the launch month of the original Resident Evil 2. New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe was the third best selling game and launch month dollar sales were 30% higher than it’s first month on the Nintendo Wii U showing that Wii U ports continue to perform better on Switch.

Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown also performed well placing 7th for the month and setting a new franchise record for launch month dollar sales. They were more than 80% higher than Ace Combat 6.
