The UK weekly retail video game sales chart for last week is in and as expected Borderlands 3 had a pretty huge launch.
2K Games and Gearbox’s latest entry in the Borderlands franchise wasn’t only the No.1 seller for the week but it is also the biggest retail launch for a game yet in 2019. The previous holder of that was Days Gone from Sony. While Borderlands 3 did have a big launch it ended up selling less than half of what Borderlands 2 did in its first week on sale. Of course digital purchases is much bigger today so that probably contributes to a lot of that.
Coming in at No.2 for the past week was Gears 5 from Microsoft and The Coalition. The game had a pretty small retail launch selling only 1/4th of what Gears of War 4 did at launch. Once again digital probably has something to do with this but the more likely reason is because most people are playing Gears 5 on Xbox Game Pass. Microsoft heavily advertised Gears 5 alongside Game Pass and even ran promotions like getting 2 months of Game Pass for $2.
At No.3 this week was another new release in eFootball PES 2020 from Konami. This game actually did have an increase compared to its last entry having sold 18.5% more than the entry last year. A few other new releases worth mentioning was GreedFall from Focus Home Interactive which placed at No.5 and Daemon X Machina on the Switch which came in at No.19.
