NPD January 2020 Report: Dragon Ball Z Kakarot Leads Software Sales While Nintendo Switch Continues to be Best Selling Hardware

Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot

The January 2020 NPD report for the US video game market is in and we have all the details about what the top selling hardware and software for the month were.

Total spending for the month reached $678 million which was down 26% from what the market made in January 2019. Hardware spending came out to $129 million in January 2020 which is down 35% when compared to January 2019. Software spending across consoles and PC was $311 million which was down 31% when compared to January 2019. That’s probably due to the fact that last year we saw titles such as Resident Evil 2 and Kingdom Hearts 3 launch in January while this year we really didn’t have titles as big as that.

The Nintendo Switch was once again the best selling hardware for the month of January 2020 both in unit sales and dollar sales.

The software charts for January saw Bandai Namco’s Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot managing to dethrone Call of Duty: Modern Warfare to take the #1 spot. Kakarot’s launch month sales are the third highest in franchise history with it only trailing Dragon Ball: FighterZ and Dragon Ball Z: Budokai.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare took the #2 spot for the month and is still the best selling game over the past 12 months. Grand Theft Auto V also continues to just keep being impressive making it to #5 in the charts. It’s the first time the game has been in the top 5 since August 2019.
