June 2020 NPD Report: The Last of Us Part II Had A Huge Opening Month

The June 2020 NPD report for the US video game market is in and we have all the details about what the top selling hardware and software for the month were.

Total spending for the month reached $1.2 billion which was up 26% from what the market made in June 2019. This is the highest spending total for a June month since the 1.3 billion it made in June 2009. Total spending year to date is now at $6.6 billion which is 19% higher than it was at this time last year. It is also the highest it has been at this point in the year since 2010 when the current spending was at 7 billion.

Hardware spending came out to $191 million in June 2020 which is down 17% when compared to June 2019. The Nintendo Switch was the best-selling hardware platform of June in both units and spending. Software spending across consoles and PC was $570 million which was up 49% when compared to June 2019.

To no one’s surprise The Last of Us Part II was the best-selling game in June and has instantly become the third best-selling game of 2020 behind only Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and Animal Crossing: New Horizons. It is also the 8th best-selling game over the past 12 months. It achieved the highest launch month dollar sales of any game released in 2020 and the 2nd highest launch month dollar sales for any Sony published game in history with only Marvel’s Spider-Man having a higher total.

Other notable callouts for the month include Ring Fit Adventure which exploded back into the charts and finished at No.7. Persona 4 Golden made it to No.18 after releasing on Steam this past month and Minecraft Dungeons made it to No.10.
