July 2020 NPD Report: Ghost of Tsushima, Paper Mario, and The Last of Us Part II Lead the Way

The July 2020 NPD report for the US video game market is in and we have all the details about what the top selling hardware and software for the month were.

Total spending for the month reached $3.6 billion which was up 32% from what the market made in July 2019. Total spending year-to-date is now at $26 billion which is 21% higher than it was at this time last year.

Hardware spending came out to $166 million in July 2020 which is down 2% when compared to July 2019. The Nintendo Switch was the best-selling hardware platform of July in both units and spending.

Sony once again had a brand-new release take the top spot for the month and that of course was Sucker Punch Production’s Ghost of Tsushima. It was July’s best-selling game and is the fastest selling Sucker Punch game ever. It immediately became the fifth best-selling game of 2020.

Another new release was Paper Mario: The Origami King which took the third-place spot. It set a new launch month sales record for a Paper Mario title. Dollar sales from it were more than double that of Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door.

The Last of Us Part II continues to perform well having only fallen from No.1 to No.4 in July. It is the third best-selling game of 2020 so far and dollar sales for The Last of Us Part II are the third highest for a Sony published game in history. It only sits behind God of War and Marvel’s Spider-Man currently.
