E3 is always sure to bring on something great every year. However, not only was E3 great this year, but it appears to be revolutionary. This year’s events showed off some great games coming up for all popular systems, and some companies have revealed new features that appear to be revolutionary. The future of gaming is near, and this year’s E3 is proof of that. Take a look at all the great content coming our way:
Sony Shows Off Oculus Touch
We knew it was only a matter of time. Virtual reality has officially hit the video game industry! Palmer Luckey, inventor of the Oculus Rift, revealed the Oculus Touch at this year’s E3. The Touch is different from the Oculus Rift, as the Touch has its own two controllers you must physically hold in your hands in order to get the full experience. However, the features of the Touch are far more vast than the features of the Rift. The Rift uses an Xbox One controller, and like the Touch, the screen is brought directly in front of you, as you are wearing a headset. The Touch, as its name would imply, allows you to feel even more like you are actually there by being able to use the two controllers to almost feel physical contact with the game you are in, as you use the controllers to pick up weapons and pull the trigger, per say. What is astonishing about both the Rift and the Touch is that it’s not just for video games. The official website for the Oculus Rift states, “The Rift is unlike anything you’ve ever experienced. Whether you’re stepping into your favorite game, watching an immersive VR movie, jumping to a destination on the other side of the world, or just spending time with friends in VR, you’ll feel like you’re really there.” This system will not only be revolutionary for gaming, but for life itself! The fact that you can spend time in a synthetic reality is something that we as gamers have dreamed about for decades, and it’s finally here!
Microsoft Shows Off HoloLens
You thought only one company was working with virtual reality? Think again! With Sony working in the VR world, it was highly likely that Microsoft would be making something VR-related too. Sony’s Oculus Rift and Oculus Touch look amazing, but Microsoft’s HoloLens looks straight-up breathtaking.
So, what exactly is the HoloLens? Microsoft’s new VR system is a device that covers your eyes and produces visual augmented reality in holographic form. What’s really amazing about this device is you can literally touch the holograms in front of you hands-free! No need for the Oculus Touch’s controls, because now with the HoloLens the ability to control the world of virtual reality is literally at your fingertips. You can display the game on any wall you want and use a controller, or you can easily switch to the 3D holographic world that will appear right in front of you. The system includes a voice-command feature, as well.
Microsoft demoed Minecraft to show off how the system was shaping up. They showed it off by putting the same lens on the camera filming someone who was actually using the HoloLens at the event. You can watch it below:
Now, doesn’t that look amazing? When this was revealed, the internet was immediately booming with excitement. Just likely everything new, however, the HoloLens has some flaws. The camera makes the reality look as though it can be seen from every angle and by looking in any direction. However, this is not the case. The current lens that the system has does not totally cover the visual field, as the outer edges of your own visual field are not totally covered; so there are parts of the reality that can and cannot be seen, depending on where you look. However, I’m sure Microsoft will pull through with this one and the system will look better than ever for when it comes out.
Some Great New Franchises Are Coming This Way
E3 2015 saw what could potentially be some of the most innovative franchises of all time. For example, take a look at The Last Guardian (pic above). The game was announced in 2009 and it finally made its way to E3 this year, where the game was confirmed to come out soon on the PS4. The game saw some troubled development, but the creators never gave up on the game because of the hype it caused. It seems to be an adventure-style game about a boy and his large animal friend. It’s good to know that this game is finally going to see its way to the market in 2016.
Horizon: Zero Dawn was another great game shown off at E3 that is sure to be amazing. Click here to watch the trailer that was shown off at the Sony’s event. The game has a female protagonist and it appears to take place in some sort of a post-apocalyptic world where there is a scarcity of humans. The humans in this game don’t seem to have the modern grasp on technology that we do today, but it is quickly revealed that they actually had an even more futuristic grasp on technology than the world today, as the over-world appears to be infested with creatures that look like animals, but are actually robots. This is an assumption, of course, that humans created these machines. The story seems to be wrapped around the protagonist and her tribe trying to find out what happened to the humans that existed before them and where these robot-like creatures came from.
These are just the two games that personally stood out to me, but the list goes on and on about the new franchises that we will be seeing in the upcoming years, and everyone should be excited.
Old Franchises Are Producing Exciting New Installments
Even though we saw a lot of new franchises on the way, we also saw some new games coming to old franchises that look equally as good. Games like Fallout 4, Gears of War 4, Black Ops 3, and Mario Maker will be out soon, and everyone is ecstatic to see these new installments coming our way. I wrote an article that discusses this topic; you can read it here.
In short, we have a lot to look forward to in the upcoming years thanks to the vast content that was shown off at this year’s E3. Some companies were a fluke this year, like Nintendo’s Event (you can read about it here). However, the good definitely weighed out the bad with this year’s event. In my opinion, this is the strongest E3 that we have ever seen, with things like virtual reality, new franchises, and new games coming to old franchises coming our way. So, what do you guys think? Do you think this was the best E3 we’ve ever seen?
