Top 5 Best Video Game Developer Teams Today

This is a list of the top 5 modern video game developers. The rankings are decided based on the popularity of games sold, amount of successful games created, profit earned, and whether or not it has specific games coming up that are expected to be successful.

5) Rockstar North

You might recognize Rockstar North as the developer of the ground-breaking Grand Theft Auto series. Last year, we got Grand Theft Auto V, the most popular game to date. What Rockstar North did that was brilliant was releasing the game for a wide variety of systems: PS3, PS4, Xbox One, Xbox 360, and even for PC. With 52 million + sales for GTA V alone, Rockstar North has become one of the top gaming publishers of all time. However, the only game series that is keeping Rockstar North standing is the Grand Theft Auto series, and GTA V is the only game to date that has been able to reach such remarkable sales for the developers. Because of this, Rockstar North is ranked number 5. Despite this, Rockstar North is likely to continue making games for this specific series, and surely after seeing the incredible success that GTA V brought, the next installment is sure to see remarkable sales as well. Rockstar North has a long career ahead of it.

4) Naughty Dog

Naughty Dog Inc. is an American video game developer that has brought on hit titles such as the Uncharted series and The Last of Us. The Uncharted series is not surprisingly the game that has brought Naughty Dog the most sales in recent years. In addition, the developer has recently revealed that Uncharted 4 is set to come out in Spring 2016. This gives dedicated gamers a lot to look forward to from Naughty Dog next year, and this game is sure to be high in sales. In fact, one can even predict that Uncharted 4 will be the best-selling game to date for the publisher. Naughty Dog is strong with the games is has put forward and luckily has several other games keeping it standing other than the Uncharted series, which is why Naughty Dog gets number 4 in this list. The only place where Naught Dog falls short is the systems is works for – they really only release games for Sony game systems. Because of this, Naughty Dog limits its sales greatly, but still manages to see a lively profit.

3) Telltale Games

Telltale Games is a publisher that has been rising since around 2012, when the popular Walking Dead video game hit the market. The Walking Dead is their most popular game to date with sales of over 28 million, but Telltale Games has been making popular games since the early 2000s and is going to continue making popular games. Telltale Games is backed up with plenty of other popular games as well, most of them based on TV shows such as Game of Thrones. Games for TV shows are not in my personal taste (like many others), but the developer proves that many people like these games with the immense profit they have made out of them. As for future games, the publisher has recently revealed that Game of Thrones Episode 5 will be coming out soon as well as Borderland – Episode 4. The publisher also does a good job of releasing games to a wide audience, as they have released games to Wii, PlayStation, Xbox, Mac OS X, iOS, PC, and even Android. It’s no surprise that Telltale Games gets number 3 in this list of top 5 game developers.

2) BioWare

BioWare is a Canadian game publisher that has been releasing popular games for several years now, and continues to do so to date. Popular games that have already been developed by BioWare include Dragon Age and Mass Effect. BioWare mainly stands on just these two legs, but both have reached incredible sales. Dragon Age: Inquisition has “sold more copies at launch than any other BioWare game” (source: BioWare), but the publisher is not yet willing to give out the specifics. Mass Effect 3 sold 1.5 million copies in March 2012 alone, and has since reached many more sales. Though that may seem small in comparison to other specific games we have covered in this list, Mass Effect: Andromeda is expected to be the highest selling game to date, when it eventually comes out, that is. The game does not have an official release date and it’s not expected to come out any time soon. When it does, however, BioWare has set its own expectations high and gamers are well aware of that. As far as specific systems, the lesser-known games BioWare has released have seen a wide variety of systems such as Wii, PC, Xbox, PlayStation, etc., but some games like Mass Effect 3 have only seen one specific system (PC in this case). Because of how well BioWare is currently doing and how well it is expected to do in the future, the publisher gets number 2 on this list.

1) Bethesda Softworks

In the world of gaming, everyone knows the name Bethesda. They have released remarkable series’ such as The Elder Scrolls and the Fallout series. The best-selling game so far is The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, with sales reaching over a whopping 23 million units and profit of approximately $1.5 billion to date. Skryim has paved the way for all future Elder Scrolls games and sets the bar high for any game that will come from Bethesda in the future. As for upcoming games, one title everyone is looking forward to is Fallout 4, which is expected to be the highest selling game in the series to date because of its take on some great new features that were revealed at E3 this year. In addition, Bethesda has created a wide variety of games for a wide variety of consoles and systems, which has helped its sales immensely. Bethesda also has high expectations for the near future and gamers are not doubting that they will exceed those expectations. Because of Bethesda’s revolutionary past, remarkable present, and profitable future, it receives number one on this list of the top 5 video game developers.
