NPD just published the sales numbers for February 2016 and according to a Nintendo PR report it brought some surprising news. According to a post here on the gamrconnect.vgchartz.com forums a PR response from Nintendo said the following in regards to the re-released Pokemon titles:
February also saw the digital debut of the 2D Pokémon Red, Pokémon Blue and Pokémon Yellow games in Nintendo eShop for the Nintendo 3DS family of systems. The games instantly shot to the top of the charts, and together, combined to break the first-week Nintendo eShop sales record previously held by Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS.
With classic graphics and timeless gameplay, these versions of the original Pokémon adventure are proving to be a popular way for fans to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the series.”
This is pretty impressive that that this many people are interested in playing the original Pokemon games again and that it broke the first week sales numbers on the eShop held by Super Smash Bros. on the 3DS. It could also be due to the fact that Nintendo previously announced that you’ll be able to transfer your Pokemon from these 3DS ports to the new Pokemon Sun and Moon coming out later this year.
Whatever the reason is says a lot about the popularity of Pokemon that it achieved this feat. Tell us in the comments what you think Pokemon Red, Blue, and Yellow selling so well.
