Last year’s undisputed Game of the Year was CD Projekt Red’s The Witcher 3. The game released to critical acclaim and as someone who has well over 100 hours sunk into the game, I can affirm just how rich and densely populated the world is. The Witcher 3 set a new standard for Western RPG games and the first DLC Heart of Stone; that expansion takes place in the existing area of No Man’s Land and focuses on Geralt’s continued adventures as he attempts to locate a mysterious figure known as the Man of Glass. As great as that expansion was, it’s the Blood and Wine expansion that fans have been anticipating the most and alas we finally have our first trailer for the expansion:
Thanks to this interview from Eurogamer, The Witcher 3 Senior Story Writer Jakub Szamalek revealed more about Blood and Wine and what players should expect from it. Like mentioned in the past, Blood and Wine will be the final adventure of The Witcher universe with Geralt as main character, a story without any strong relation with the main story. Mr. Szamalek believes the team has managed to create something that’s even better than the main game, also thanks to players’ feedback.
Jakub Szamalek feels like the team didn’t manage to create a charismatic enemy for the main story so, with Blood and Wine, they have focused on creating a very memorable antagonist. The team also did the same with the Hearts of Stone antagonist so we should be in for something quite good. Jakub Szamalek also confirmed that Blood and Wine will feature a rather complex story that players will certainly enjoy.
The official sypnosis for the expansions reads:
“THE LAND OF WINE IS DRENCHED IN BLOOD”
For the last time become professional monster slayer Geralt of Rivia and explore Toussaint, a remote land untouched by war, where you will unravel the horrifying secret behind a beast terrorizing the kingdom. Blood and Wine is a 30+ hour adventure full of dark deeds, unexpected twists, romance and deceit.
Finally, the release of the teaser trailer also confirmed the release date to be May 31, 2016. The expansion will be on Xbox One, PS4 and PC and is presumably the last big expansion for The Witcher 3. May is already packed with some great games such as DOOM, Overwatch, Battleborn and more but this expansion offers unmatched value so all The Witcher 3 owners should be delving into Blood and Wine come the end of May.
