Remember the 1993 Super Mario Bros. film? If you don’t, then you probably don’t want to anyway. Yes, the last time we saw Nintendo embrace the film industry, we got quite a peculiar full film of the Super Mario Bros series with Mario, Luigi, Bowser, Toad, and everything! It seems that after taking a major step backwards in revenue due to the Wii U being a failure, Nintendo will be taking new measures to increase revenue. One of these measures seems to be undertaking the film-making industry.
This news comes directly from Nintendo President Tatsumi Kimishima. Kimishima told the Japanese newspaper known as The Asahi Shimbum that the company would soon be looking to produce its own films. This time, however, Nintendo will choose to make them themselves rather than licensing out the characters, like we saw with the 1993 Super Mario Bros film. Currently, there is no word on which characters will see themselves hit the big screen within the next few years, but I would assume that we would see characters that seem to idolize Nintendo, like Link and Mario.
What do you think about Nintendo taking this step towards a new kind of innovation? Do you think Nintendo is evolving for the greater good? Let us know in the comments.
