Uncharted 4 Is The Front Runner For GOTY 2016, Can Anything Top It?

We are now half way through 2016 if you can believe it and It’s a great time to look at how the Game of the Year 2016 competition is heating up. We’ve seen a lot of great games this year so far including The Witness, Doom, Overwatch, Inside and more. While all of those game were fantastic when it comes to the GOTY discussion I feel like there is only one game right now in 2016 that is the clear front runner. That game is of course the latest masterpiece from Naughty Dog, Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End.

Uncharted 4 was released in May to universal praise from critics. To date it has 110 critic scores on Metacritic giving it an average score of 93 making it the highest rated game of the year so far. The next closest games to it are indie game Inside which has a 92 based on 57 scores and Overwatch on PC which has a 91 based on 54 scores. Both of those games while impressive is no where near Uncharted 4 because they only have half the critic scores as Uncharted 4 does. For Uncharted 4 to have 110 review scores and still have a 93 makes it a beast of a game. For comparison with 2015’s GOTY winner, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt had a 92 based on 79 critic scores. There really are no other games out there that I can think of that got over 100 scores from critics and maintained as high a score as Uncharted 4 has. It is truly an outstanding achievement.

In terms of perfect scores Uncharted 4 currently has 38 perfect scores making it the third highest in history. Funny enough the number 1 and number 2 highest were also games by Naughty Dog and were also games that dominated the Game of the Year discussion in the years they released. The Last of Us has 42 perfect scores making it the highest in history while Uncharted 2 has 39. If you want to know how some other top games performed Grand Theft Auto V has 35 perfect scores while The Witcher 3 has 17. As for other games released this year so far Inside has 14 perfect scores, Overwatch has 9, and Dark Souls 3 has 6. I think it is pretty clear just from that above that Uncharted 4 is the clear front runner at this point.

So another question to be asked is what else coming this year could top Uncharted 4? I honestly don’t know of anything that I’ve seen that looks impressive enough to top it. No Man’s Sky I don’t feel like is a game that will have a broad enough appeal to put it in that discussion. Deus Ex: Mankind Divided could possibly be a contender if it turns out well but the graphics and voice acting that I’ve seen from that game make me doubt it. Final Fantasy 15 supposedly is not in the best shape and when was the last time a Final Fantasy game was in any GOTY discussion? All of the major shooters I have to rule out as we haven’t seen a shooter be a major player in the GOTY discussion in many many years so I think it is fair to rule out Call of Duty, Battlefield 1, and TitanFall 2. Gears of War 4 has needs to prove itself before I’m going to consider that has that franchise hasn’t been in the discussion since the original Gears of War came out.

The only 2 major ones I see that could compete with Uncharted 4 is Mafia 3 and Watch Dogs 2 and I say Watch Dogs 2 with hesitation as well. Mafia 3 is really shaping up well and it impressed a lot of people including myself coming out of E3 2016. Watch Dogs 2 could be a contender if it can become the Assassin’s Creed 2 for that franchise. However Ubisoft games are known to be buggy and they really haven’t put out a GOTY contender in a long time either so it’s going to be another game I have to wait and see.

At this point I really see no other game that I can say for sure that can top what Uncharted 4 has achieved. It’s going to have to be a game that can top the complete package that Uncharted 4 delivered. That means more impressive story, graphics, animation, voice acting, etc. Time will tell but half way through 2016 Uncharted 4 is way out in front. What games do you think could compete with Uncharted 4 come the end of the year? Tell us in the comments below.

Have your say!
