No matter which current-gen console you’re playing on, battery life is a problem that plagues most of us console gamers. Microsoft’s Xbox One sticks with the use of AA batteries whereas Sony’s PlayStation 4 uses a built-in battery in their premier controller, the DualShock 4. The advantages and disadvantages of these options have long been debated but there’s a rather simple and cost-effective solution to both.
Nyko is one product provider that aims to solve this issue of battery life for console gamers with their rechargeable battery product line-up. In particular, the Nyko modular charge station for PS4 and Xbox One.
It’s fair to say that we have all gamers have experienced that frantic situation where we desperately try to replace our AA batteries or plug our controller USB cable as our controller dies mid-match but the Nyko modular charge station effectively ensures that isn’t a problem anymore and for the small price to pay, it’s a real game-changer.
There are no faults to be found when it comes to the design of the modular charge station, it’s not overly flashy but it doesn’t need to be. The design aesthetic is simple, clean and conforms to the design of your PS4 or Xbox One so you don’t have to worry about it being obtrusive. The sleek, modular design ensures that the charge station fits with the rest of the console and the wireless functionality means seamless charging without the need for a bunch of wires.
The dual port charging dock also means you can charge up to two controllers. If you only have one controller though, don’t worry. Charging the controller overnight ensured a full day’s worth, if not more, of constant gameplay with no battery worries. If you do indeed own more than one controller though, the dual port charging dock is a more-than-welcome design since you can always have one controller on charge whilst playing with the other.
The modular charge station connects to your console via the simple use of a USB port either at the back, side or front of your console. The modular charge station comes packed with 2 protective sleeves to be placed on top of your console for extra protection against any accidental scuffs. For the Xbox One in particular which has a glossy finish, these protective sleeves were very welcome.
Something that is really clever about the Nyko modular charge station’s design is the suction cups that it uses to keep the station in place. It’s super simple to set-up and once you do there’s no accidental sliding or anything of that nature; something that speaks of the true build quality of the product. The suction cups based design also means there’s literally no damage or marks to your console, even if you opt-out of using the provided protective materials.
The Modular Charge Station features two custom NiMH rechargeable batteries that make use of Nyko’s custom battery covers for your Xbox One controller. What’s useful about this approach is that it allows for a drop-and-charge functionality. Once you’ve finished up with a session of playing your favourite game, you simply drop the controller into one of the docks and it chargers just like that.
For anyone that’s not aware, NiMH batteries are nickel–metal hydride batteries. A NiMH battery can have two to three times the capacity of an equivalent size NiCd (another type of battery that other third-party accessory manufacturers use) and its energy density can approach that of a lithium-ion battery. In layman’s terms, this battery is going to last a long time.
For those that have a taste for gaming accessories already, the recently released premium Xbox One controller or the Elite controller also works perfectly fine with the Nyko modular charge station. As premium and elite as this new controller is, it still uses AA batteries and for a fraction of the price you paid for the Elite controller, you can pick up a new Nyko modular charge station to really save you some bother.
I found initial charge time to be around 4 hours but as I’ve been using it more frequently, I have recorded that the time-to-charge has dropped since then so you really don’t have to wait too long and if you have two controllers then the modular charge station means you will practically never run out of battery for your controllers.
In what might at first seem like a trivial feature, the light-up notification on the front of the product has become a very welcome and useful feature for Nyko to have included. Essentially, this will light up when the controller is in place and being charged, allowing you to easily tell when the controller is in the dock and charging as normal.
Nyko’s modular charge station is a must-buy for console gamers on PS4 or Xbox One. With a one-time small purchase, Nyko’s modular charge station effective renders the annoyance of AA batteries or USB cable charging something of the past. I’ve been using it daily and I can’t see myself stopping anytime soon.
