The Playstation has been around in its various guises since 3rd December, 1994 and has since spawned eight generations of computer consoles. More than 400 million units of its consoles have been sold worldwide over a 22-year period. However, the argument about which games on the consoles have reigned supreme remains up for debate. Here is our list of the top 5 Playstation games of all time.
The Last Of Us
A gritty plot set against the backdrop of a zombie apocalypse certainly feels very en vogue right now so therefore it is no surprise that this obsession in pop culture with the undead spurred the release of this stunning apocalyptic third-person shooter that has the storyline, gameplay, and graphics to make it one of the greatest Playstation titles of all time.
Released in 2013 by developer Naughty Dog, this game has the player take control of a hardened character called Joel who is given the job of escorting a young girl called Ellie across a post-apocalyptic United States. The reason for this is kept secret to begin with but as the plot unfolds and the situation changes it soon becomes clear that this is more than just an ordinary little girl. The atmosphere and tension delivered by this game offers a sense of realism that was never imaginable before. That is down to the capabilities of the Playstation 4 and The Last Of Us realised the full potential of the console with devastatingly bittersweet impact.
Grand Theft Auto III
The Grand Theft Auto series from developer DMA Design has long entertained players since its first release on the Playstation back in 1997. However, the release of Grand Theft Auto III in 2001 via publisher Rockstar Games changed the landscape of not only the GTA franchise but computer console gaming as whole.
Grand Theft Auto had always been a 2D-based game where players had an overhead view of the action. This was turned on its head when GTA III offered an open world action-adventure setting allowing players to roam the Liberty City streets at their own free will. Players take control of the main character Claude who is initially left for dead and becomes embroiled in the underworld of crime as he seeks revenge on those that tried to murder him. The series has only gone from strength-to-strength and Grand Theft Auto IV went on to break industry sales records by becoming the fastest selling entertainment product in history at the time of its release in 2008 but its predecessor takes the spot on this list for its sheer innovative class.
The second apocalyptic title on this list is the iconic Resident Evil. It was the game that ignited a whole new franchise that would see sequels, comics, and even movies released. Developer Capcom, the name behind the famous Street Fighter series, introduced a new level of horror into computer console gaming with the launch of this fright fest on the original Playstation back in 1996.
Players are consumed by a plot that sees various characters dealing with the fall out of a virus outbreak called the T-Virus that forces zombies and other monsters to materialise. They are discovered to be biological weapons invented by the sinister Umbrella Corporation and it is down to the protagonists within the story, Chris Redfield and Jill Valentine, to save the world from annihilation. The game has seen 23 sequel titles released with another two more currently in development for a range of computer consoles. However, this is the game that started it all and brought fear into the living rooms of players all over the world.
Hard Rock Casino
Nowadays everyone that wants to experience casino gaming from the comfort of their own arm chair simply needs to sign up with one of the thousands of online casinos that are operating across the globe. Everyone can get their gambling kicks at the click of a button at sites with endless amounts of classic casino table games and slots at their disposal.
It was not always that easy. In the days before online casinos were mainstream publisher Crave Entertainment released the Hard Rock Casino game. It was the online casino before online casinos were online casinos. A wide range of table games such as blackjack, video poker, and slots were available for players to enjoy and for a Playstation 2 release it was very much ahead of its time. The backing of the Hard Rock Casino brand only added to its prestige. Ah, the halcyon days of computer casino gaming before the market became saturated and everything was a lot more innocent.
Finally, we have one of the most popular games to ever grace the computer console industry. The FIFA series has defined the lives of children all over the world ever since its debut release way back in 1993 with the FIFA International Soccer on the Sega Mega Drive. A whole lot has changed since then. FIFA developed its own identity through EA Sports and became mixed up in a bitter rivalry with Konami’s Pro Evolution Soccer. The two games jostled for dominance in the market and fans of the games were forced to pick a side with being a player of both games simply not an option.
It was in the early 2000s when something changed. PES was ruling the waves and many had claimed that FIFA had lost its way. Then came a critical moment that changed everything. EA Sports hired a Scottish video game engineer called Gary Paterson who was a massive fan of the PES games. He made it his objective to deliver a FIFA game that had all the game play style of PES with the authenticity of FIFA. What followed was a decade of absolute domination and a return to form by EA Sports that saw it peak with the release of FIFA 12 in 2011 on the Playstation 3. It is still considered to be the best FIFA game in the series and almost blew PES off the map. All hail, the greatest football simulation of all time!
