Games With Gold Has Noticeably Declined In Recent Months

If you’re an Xbox Live user, you will have hopefully realised that you are entitled to a selection of games every month with Microsoft’s Games With Gold, with Sony competing in the form of PlayStation Plus’s monthly selection of games also. The majority of the time Games With Gold shines as bright as the sun with their incredible picks for the players such as Halo Reach, Assassin’s Creed IV: Black FlagTomb Raider and Gears of War: Judgement to name a few while PlayStation Plus’s free game selection generally always fails to reach the same kind of hype that Microsoft got, however in recent months the selections have been relatively bad, in some cases PlayStation Plus games have even been somewhat better.

There have been mixed opinions for this month, with some even going as far as to say it’s one of the worst. It’s not to say that it’s always been a mix of terrible games, as the majority of the time, Microsoft is no match for Sony with their usually appalling line-up, October 2016’s line-up wasn’t anything special, with only one being noteworthy (Resident Evil HD).

It’s been around for nearly three years now, and with more than 100 games with the Games With Gold program being offered, many of them have been complete duds and it seems to be more of a hard time trying to find the diamond in the rough with the releases, lets take a look at last month’s Games With Gold and PlayStation Plus games (table provided by IGN)

PS Plus Games Retail Price Games with Gold Retail Price
Resident Evil HD $19.99 Super Mega Baseball: Extra Innings $19.99
Transformers Devastation $39.99 The Escapists $19.99
From Dust $14.99 MX vs. ATV Reflex $29.99
Mad Riders $9.99 I Am Alive $14.99
Code: Realize ~Guardian of Rebirth~ $39.99
Actual Sunlight $4.99
Total Retail Value $129.94 Total Retail Value $84.96

October, for both Sony and Microsoft with regards to their free game line-up wasn’t anything to point out as incredible, and it’s worth noting that the total retail for PlayStation Plus games will usually always be higher than the Games With Gold due to the 3 platforms (PS4, PS4 & PSP) they are releasing free games onto, rather than the 2 for Xbox (Xbox One & 360) however comparing it to June below:

PS Plus Games Retail Price Games with Gold Retail Price
NBA 2K16 $59.99 Goat Simulator $9.99
Gone Home $19.99 The Crew $29.99
Echochrome $9.99 Super Meat Boy $14.99
Siren: Blood Curse (Ep 1-12) $19.99 XCOM: Enemy Unknown $39.99
God of War: Chains of Olympus $14.99 Costume Quest 2 $14.99
Little Deviants $13.49
Total Retail Value $138.44 Total Retail Value $109.95

This month for both sides was pretty fantastic, but since then we’ve had what seems like the scraps from the bottom of the barrel and for the insane amount of money we’re paying monthly/annually for the services they provide, it really doesn’t add up, does it? So why have Microsoft gone from such a positive lineup of games to a poorly executed and unnoteworthy one?

The problem I see right now with Games With Gold, is that with the exception of maybe one game (if we’re lucky) each month, all of the titles seem to be indie titles and I’m not saying that’s a bad thing, but the ones we’re getting are mediocre at best – even with the recent backwards compatibility releases, they’re still not giving the fans what they want and I know we shouldn’t expect them to just dish out the latest and greatest of games but is it too little to ask for something better than Super Mega Baseball: Extra Innings? I mean, seriously, what even is that? Before this month I’d never heard of it. The quality of the games has dropped significantly and this isn’t a bash at Microsoft individually, even though the title says so, but Sony too. Neither program offers more bang for your buck and at this point, I’m not even anticipating anything good anymore. Thanks for nothing, guys.

So what about your thoughts on the matter? Do you think Games With Gold have always been better than PlayStation Plus? Perhaps it’s the other way around? What was your favourite month for either of the two, let us know down below in the comments!

Have your say!

  1. I think both Microsoft, and Sony could do a better job with the free games for Gold and Plus. Some months I just look at them and scratch my head. This month was one of those months. At this point they have a large catalog of games to choose from, so they have plenty of options.

  2. Micro$oft still requires XBL Gold if you want to play online Free to Play games. RIDCULOUS.

Playstation never requires PS Plus for its Free to Play games.
