Top 10 Best Reviewed Games of 2016 According to Metacritic

It’s almost time to say goodbye to the year 2016 and what a year is was for video games. 2016 brought us some of the best games of the current generation to date whether they were AAA games or indie games. Since the new game releases are slowing down and almost done for the year we thought we would put a list together showing you what the best reviewed games of 2016 were according to

We’ll be listing the top 10 from bottom to top and for games that were on multiple platforms we’ll be using the one that had the most review scores. Also since this list is focused on the top 10 games of the year we will not be including DLC or expansions so sorry Witcher 3: Blood and Wine but you are disqualified. Without further ado here are the top 10 games of 2016.

10. Titanfall 2

titanfall 2

Coming in at #10 is Titanfall 2 from EA and Respawn Entertainment as the game has a 89 average on the PS4 version on Metacritic. The game released to great praise from critics for its new single player campaign and great multiplayer. While the game hasn’t had great sales success it’s still one of the best reviewed games of the year.

9. Dark Souls 3

From Software released their final souls game back in April in Dark Souls 3 and it comes in as the ninth best scoring game of the year with an 89 score for the PS4 version based on 69 scores. While it didn’t quite match the score that Bloodborne achieved in 2015 Dark Souls 3 is outstanding any way you look at it. If this truly is the final souls game at least it went out in a good way.

8. Rez Infinite

At number eight we have Enhance Games remastered/enhanced version of Rez, Rez Infinite. The game released a couple months ago on PS4 and PlayStation VR and earned a 89 average score based on 44 scores. While the game is a remaster of the original Rez it also brought new content in the form of Area X which is a fantastic new addition to the game. If you have a PlayStation VR Area X is even more immersive and one of the best showcases of what VR can do for games.

7. Owlboy

Owlboy is a PC exclusive that has been 10 years in the making and it paid off. The game has a 90 score on Metacritic based on 41 scores. It’s a 2D platformer with a beautiful pixel art style and despite that long development cycle it turned out well which seems to be a trend for games in 2016. Congrats to Owlboy on coming in at number seven.

6. Stephen’s Sausage Roll

Yep this is a weird one indeed but the number six best scoring game of the year is the PC game Stephen’s Sausage Roll. The game earned a 90 based on 9 scores. It’s a PC puzzle game where you push link sausages around to fully cook them. It just goes to show that being different can sometimes be a good thing

5. Forza Horizon 3

At the #5 spot we have Microsoft Studios first 90+ rated game of this console generation in Forza Horizon 3. The game earned a 91 average rating for the Xbox One version based on 90 scores making it not only their best rated exclusive game of the year but of the generation. Forza Horizon 3 is beautiful and lots of fun to play and is probably the best racing game since Burnout Paradise. Playground Games and Microsoft should be very proud of this one.

4. Overwatch

Blizzard continues to put out awesome and groundbreaking games as their new first person shooter IP Overwatch was the #4 best reviewed game of the year earning a 91 on the PC version based on 62 scores. While the game has no single player campaign it does have a huge variety of hero characters to play as in the multiplayer each with their own unique playstyle and abilities. Blizzard continues adding new free content to the game and hosting special events so this game is one that won’t be forgotten any time soon.

3. Out of the Park Baseball 17

Another PC exclusive game comes in at number three as Out of the Park Baseball 17 earned a 92 based on 8 scores. It’s a baseball game where you step into the shoes of a GM and help manage your club. I bet this is one you didn’t expect to see this high on the list.

Playdead’s follow up to their first game Limbo proved to be one of the best games of this year and console generation as INSIDE earned a 92 average on Metacritic based on 86 reviews for the Xbox One version. The game told an amazing story with no words at all and has amazing atmosphere and animation. It says a lot for a small indie team to put out a game that was better than almost all the other AAA games that released this year so congrats to the Playdead team on coming in at number 2.

1. Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End

Finally coming in as the #1 best reviewed game of 2016 is Naughty Dog’s Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End. Naughty Dog hit it out of the park again as Uncharted 4 has a 93 score on Metacritic based on 113 scores which is truly remarkable. The game is the final chapter of Nathan Drake’s Story and it didn’t disappoint. Story, gameplay, graphics, audio, you name it Uncharted 4 did it better than pretty much every other game this year. Congrats to Sony and the team at Naughty Dog on Uncharted 4 being the best reviewed game of the year on Metacritic.

Have your say!

  1. You’re about the only decent writer this site has. That said, I would have omitted any titles with so few reviews.
