This year promises to be a revolutionary one for gaming; highlighted by the launching of new consoles, and some exciting new IP’s. The Xbox One, PS4, and Switch will all have features to keep their gamers entertained throughout the year. Each have varying strengths to offer this year, some more interesting than others.
The top strength for the each of the three consoles are:
Xbox One: High-Quality Exclusive Games
The Xbox One may have difficulty attracting much attention this year, with Microsoft focusing most of their efforts on the forthcoming Xbox Project Scorpio console. Xbox One’s exclusive titles this year may be lacking in quantity, but that does not mean they are lacking in Quality. Some of the notable Xbox One-exclusives include: Sea of Thieves, State of Decay 2, and Halo Wars 2. Sea of Thieves is a game that has huge potential for Microsoft, and promises to include some of the most immersive co-op gameplay that we have ever seen from a console game. State of Decay 2 promises to build on the features that made its predecessor such a hit. State of Decay 2 promises more zombie-survival fun with the added features of four player co-op and a more expansive community management system. Halo Wars 2, has potential to be trendsetter, it is an RTS game built specifically for a console, and if it has any sort of success, it could open the door for more development of console-RTS games. Also, Halo Wars 2, provides a perfect way for Microsoft to showcase its competitive online multiplayer community.

Playstation 4: Numerous PS4-Exclusive Games
The greatest Strength of the PS4 this year is their massive amount of exclusive games that are lined up for 2017. The majority of the most-anticipated games of 2017 are PS4-exclusives, the list includes: Horizon Zero Dawn, Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy, MLB: The Show 17, Ace Combat 7, Uncharted: The Lost Legacy, Yakuza 0 and a couple Kingdom Hearts releases. In particular, Horizon Zero Dawn looks promising and has already garnered the recognition of most gamers as a “Game of the year” contender. Crash Bandicoot, will allow gamers to relive their younger gaming days, with a remade collection of one Sony’s most iconic game series. The Kingdom Hearts series finally makes it debut on the PS4 on Jan. 24, with the release of Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8, and a couple months later with the release of Kingdom Hearts 1.5 + 2.5 Remix on March 28. The Playstation’s exclusive titles set to release this year outmatch the number of any other console. All of the previously mentioned games and more, promise to keep PS4 gamers entertained throughout the year.

The Nintendo Switch’s big strength (besides being the “new” console) is the versatility of the Hybrid console. Gamers can switch with ease from playing the Nintendo Switch as a Handheld device, to using the Switch as console by simply placing it in the proper docking station connected to your television. The Switch’s controllers can be detached from the console and used as individual controllers so that gamers can play with their friends on the go. The detachable controllers used when the Switch is in “hand-held mode” are also the same controllers used when the Switch is in “TV mode.” The ability to play anywhere and in a variety of ways makes the Switch unlike any other console that we have ever seen. There is sure to be some functionality issues that will need to be fixed post-launch, but if the Switch lives up to be the ideal hybrid gaming machine, then we are in for a treat.
