April is almost here and now that both Microsoft and Sony have announced their free games lineup for the month via Games With Gold and PlayStation Plus it’s time to look at which is offering the better value for gamers. As always we’ll look at several different areas and compare them such as the price value, how well the games were received by press, and how old the games are.
Keep in mind this is just our opinion on which is better for the month as every person has different tastes and may like certain games better than others. Which is better in April? Let’s find out.
Games With Gold Price Values
Games With Gold in April 2018 is offering 4 games as always. Two Xbox One games and two Xbox 360 games which are also playable on Xbox One. On Xbox One you’re getting The Witness and Assassin’s Creed: Syndicate. On Xbox 360 you’re getting Cars 2: The Videogame and Dead Space 2. Now in terms of value let’s take a look at what each game is worth.
The Witness – $39.99
Assassin’s Creed: Syndicate – $49.99
Cars 2: The Videogame – $19.99
Dead Space 2 – $19.99
Total Value: $130
So for the fourth month of 2018 you are getting a huge $130 in value in free games with Games With Gold. That makes April one of the biggest month’s in terms of value for the service in a very long time. Now sure you may look at Assasin’s Creed Syndicate and say that the game is nowhere near worth $50 anymore but that is still the price on Xbox Live so it stands. It’s really that and The Witness that drive the value up in April. Now let’s look at the PlayStation Plus lineup.
PlayStation Plus Price Values
In April, PlayStation Plus members are getting 6 games for free. On the PS4 we are once again getting two AAA games in Mad Max and Trackmania Turbo. On the PS3 both In Space We Brawl and Toy Home are free. 99 Vidas and Q*Bert Rebooted are both free on the Vita and round out the lineup. In addition In Space We Brawl is Cross-Buy with PS4 and both 99 Vidas and Q*Bert are Cross-Buy with PS4 and PS3 giving you a total of five PS4 games and four PS3 games. Now let’s look at the price values.
Mad Max – $19.99
Trackmania Turbo – $39.99
In Space We Brawl – $8.99
Toy Home – $9.99
99 Vidas – $9.99
Q*Bert Rebooted – $9.99
Total Value: $99
So for the fourth month of 2018 you are getting a total of $99 in value. This is yet another month where you are getting at or over $100 worth of value in free games. Trackmania Turbo is the highest here being a $40 title where pretty much all of the PS3 and Vita games are $10. It’s yet another solid month for the PlayStation Plus service.
So when comparing both services in the Value category Games with Gold easily wins this month with a $130-$99 difference. Both services continue to give you more in a single month than you pay for a whole year though so you’re not going wrong either way.
Price Value Winner: Games with Gold
Now we have looked at what each service is giving you in terms of money value but are the games any good? In this area we are going to look at how each game was received critically and see which lineup comes out on top. I’ll be using Metacritic to pull the scores from and for multiplatform games I will use the platform that had the most review scores. However for games that only have scores of a PC version I will not use them as PC versions can differ greatly from console versions.
Games with Gold Scores
The Witness – 87
Assassin’s Creed: Syndicate – 76
Cars 2: The Videogame – 72
Dead Space 2 – 90
Review Average – 81
So looking at the Games with Gold lineup you end up with an 81 average which is great and one of the best overall lineups we’ve seen in a very long time for Games with Gold. Dead Space 2 is the highest rated game here with a 90 average. The Witness is right behind it with an 87 average. Assassin’s Creed and Cars 2 scored a bit lower with a 76 and 72 but still those are solid scores. Overall it’s hard to complain about this lineup which is something we haven’t be able to say really about the service over the past half a year or so. Now let’s look at the PlayStation Plus lineup.
PlayStation Plus Scores:
Mad Max – 69
Trackmania Turbo – 81
In Space We Brawl – 54
Toy Home – 57
99 Vidas – 61
Q*Bert Rebooted – 44
Review Average – 61
So looking at the PlayStation Plus lineup you end up with a 61 average which is pretty poor. The average this month once again doesn’t paint a clear picture for just PS4 owners. Factoring in just the PS4 games you would have a 75 average but the PS3 and Vita games in April received horrible scores and made the overall average one of the worst we’ve seen. It’s clear Sony is putting all of their resources towards securing solid PS4 games while they wait out this final year of service for Plus members on PS3 and Vita.
So looking at both lineups Games with Gold wins this month with a 20 point win. There are some pretty good PS4 games but the overall Games with Gold lineup is far better this month. Again it’s up to each individual to decide what games appeal more to them.
Review Score Winner – Games with Gold
Third Round: Game Newness
Once again we will be looking at and comparing how new are the games that each service is offering. Some gamers prefer to get newer games versus older games so we like to look at when each of these games came out and see which is better in this area.
The Witness – September 13, 2016
Assassin’s Creed: Syndicate – October 23, 2015
Cars 2: The Videogame – June 21, 2011
Dead Space 2 – January 25, 2011
Looking at the Games with Gold lineup we have one game that is a year and a half old, one game that is a little over two years old and two games that are seven years old. Now let’s look at the PlayStation Plus lineup.
Mad Max – September 1, 2015
Trackmania Turbo – March 22, 2016
In Space We Brawl – October 14, 2014
Toy Home – December 20, 2007
99 Vidas – July 18, 2017
Q*Bert Rebooted – February 17, 2015
Looking at the Plus lineup you have one game that is less than a year old, one game that is two years old, two games that are either three years old or close to it, one game that is a little over three years old and one game that is over ten years old.
So when comparing both lineups Games with Gold for maybe the first time seems to have the more recent games. Yes they have two games that are seven years old but the other two are more recent. PlayStation Plus has Toy Home that is one of the first PS3 PSN titles released over ten years ago. Again this area might not mean anything to you but some gamers like getting newer games for free as there is a lesser chance that they have played them.
Game Newness Winner – Games with Gold
So for the fourth month of 2018 Games with Gold comes out as the overall winner with a 3-0 win over PlayStation Plus in the compared areas. All of this doesn’t really mean anything though and as always it’s up to each gamer to decide which lineup is better for their individual tastes. Be sure to let us know in the comments which lineup you like better in April.
Overall Winner: Games with Gold
