PlayStation Plus vs. Games With Gold – Which Is Better? May 2018 Edition

May is almost here and now that both Microsoft and Sony have announced their free games lineup for the month via Games With Gold and PlayStation Plus it’s time to look at which is offering the better value for gamers. As always we’ll look at several different areas and compare them such as the price value, how well the games were received by press, and how old the games are.

Keep in mind this is just our opinion on which is better for the month as every person has different tastes and may like certain games better than others. Which is better in May? Let’s find out.

Games With Gold Price Values

Games With Gold in May 2018 is offering 4 games as always. Two Xbox One games and two Xbox 360 games which are also playable on Xbox One. On Xbox One you’re getting Super Mega Baseball 2 and Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. On Xbox 360 you’re getting Streets of Rage Collection and Vanquish. Now in terms of value let’s take a look at what each game is worth.

Super Mega Baseball 2 – $29.99

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain – $19.99

Streets of Rage Collection – $9.99

Vanquish – $19.99

Total Value: $80

So for the fifth month of 2018 you are getting $80 in value in free games with Games With Gold. The biggest value here is Super Mega Baseball 2 which is $30. What makes it even better is that it is launching on Games with Gold so there is zero chance that you had the game already. Now let’s look at the PlayStation Plus lineup.

PlayStation Plus Price Values

In May PlayStation Plus members are getting 6 games for free. On the PS4 we are once again getting two AAA games in Beyond: Two Souls and Rayman Legends. On the PS3 both Risen 3: Titan Lords and Eat Them are free. Furmins and King Oddball are both free on the Vita and round out the lineup. King Oddball is also Cross-Buy across PS4 and PS3 as well giving you an additional game on those platforms. Now let’s look at the price values.

Beyond: Two Souls – $29.99

Rayman Legends – $39.99

Risen 3: Titan Lords – $14.99

Eat Them – $9.99

Furmins – $6.49

King Oddball – $4.99

Total Value: $106.49

So for the fifth month of 2018 you are getting a total of $106.49 in value. This is yet another month where you are getting at or over $100 worth of value in free games. Rayman Legends is the highest here being a $40 title with Beyond: Two Souls a close second being priced at $30. The PS3 and Vita lineups aren’t worth much as usual. It’s yet another solid month for the PlayStation Plus service.

So when comparing both services in the Value category PlayStation Plus easily wins this month with a $106-$80 difference. Both services continue to give you more in a single month than you pay for a whole year though so you’re not going wrong either way.

Price Value Winner: PlayStation Plus

Now we have looked at what each service is giving you in terms of money value but are the games any good? In this area we are going to look at how each game was received critically and see which lineup comes out on top. I’ll be using Metacritic to pull the scores from and for multiplatform games I will use the platform that had the most review scores. However for games that only have scores of a PC version I will not use them as PC versions can differ greatly from console versions.

Games with Gold Scores

Super Mega Baseball 2 – ?

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain – 93

Streets of Rage Collection – 84

Vanquish – 84

Review Average – 87

So looking at the Games with Gold lineup you end up with an 87 average which is I think the highest ever average for Games with Gold. Now this is only factoring three games as Super Mega Baseball 2 has yet to release and we don’t know how good it is yet. Once reviews come in for it I will update this article. As it stands now though it speaks to the quality of the three other games. Obviously MGS5 is one of the highest rated games of this generation which I mentioned last year when it was on PlayStation Plus. Vanquish and Streets of Rage Collection are also great games though. Games with Gold hasn’t been great since Game Pass took off but the service is starting to show signs of life again these past couple of months. Now let’s look at the PlayStation Plus lineup.

PlayStation Plus Scores:

Beyond: Two Souls – 72

Rayman Legends – 90

Risen 3: Titan Lords – 36

Eat Them – 65

Furmins – 69

King Oddball – 66

Review Average – 66

So looking at the PlayStation Plus lineup you end up with a 66 average which is better than last month but still pretty poor. The average this month once again doesn’t paint a clear picture for those who just care about the PS4 games. You would have an average in the 80’s if only those were considered but as usual lately the PS3 and Vita games are really hurting the average. Rayman Legends is one of the highest rated games this generation with a 90 score and Beyond: Two Souls is good as well with a 72. However then you have something like Risen 3 that as a 36 average and yeah that will pretty much ruin anything. It’s clear Sony is putting all of their resources towards securing solid PS4 games while they wait out this final year of service for Plus members on PS3 and Vita.

So looking at both lineups Games with Gold wins this month with a 21 point win. There are some pretty good PS4 games but the overall Games with Gold lineup is far better this month. Again it’s up to each individual to decide what games appeal more to them.

Review Score Winner – Games with Gold

Third Round: Game Newness

Once again we will be looking at and comparing how new are the games that each service is offering. Some gamers prefer to get newer games versus older games so we like to look at when each of these games came out and see which is better in this area.

Super Mega Baseball 2 – May 1, 2018

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain – September 1, 2015

Streets of Rage Collection – May 30, 2012

Vanquish – October 19, 2010

Looking at the Games with Gold lineup you have a brand new game in Super Mega Baseball 2. Then you have one game that is almost three years old, one game that is six years old and one game that is almost eight years old. Now let’s look at the PlayStation Plus lineup.

Beyond: Two Souls – November 24, 2015

Rayman Legends – February 18, 2014

Risen 3: Titan Lords – August 12, 2014

Eat Them – December 21, 2010

Furmins – December 17, 2013

King Oddball – April 8, 2014

Looking at the PS+ lineup you have one game that is around two and half years old, three games that are four years old, one game that is a little over four and a half years old and one game that is around seven and half years old.

So when comparing both lineups PlayStation Plus comes out as the winner. All but one of their games have released in this current generation cycle while the Games with Gold lineup has two games that released prior. Yes they do have Super Mega Baseball 2 which is brand new but overall the Plus lineup is more recent. Again this area might not mean anything to you but some gamers like getting newer games for free as there is a lesser chance that they have played them.

Game Newness Winner – PlayStation Plus

So for the fifth month of 2018 PlayStation Plus comes out as the overall winner with a 2-1 win over Games with Gold in the compared areas. All of this doesn’t really mean anything though and as always it’s up to each gamer to decide which lineup is better for their individual tastes. Be sure to let us know in the comments which lineup you like better in May.

Overall Winner: PlayStation Plus
