The NPD Group released their tracking report for the month off October 2018 today and it shows that the game industry is as healthy as ever.
Consumers spent $1.545 billion in the month of October which is up year-over-year when compared to the $894 million it made in October 2017. This also makes it the highest total spend in an October month since the NPD began tracking in 1995. This record was helped by the two biggest games of 2018 releasing last month which of course were Call of Duty: Black Ops IIII and Red Dead Redemption 2.
Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 was the best selling title in October which I’m sure will surprise some people. It had the eighth highest dollar sales month in video game history since the NPD started tracking in 1995. It is also the best selling game of the year now and the second best selling game of the past 12 months trailing only Call of Duty: WWII.
Red Dead Redemption 2 meanwhile also sold very well becoming the second best selling game last month with only nine days tracked. It is also now the second best selling game of 2018 and launch month sales were more than triple what the original Red Dead Redemption did back in May 2010.
Other titles such as SoulCalibur VI, Super Mario Party, and Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey also sold very well.
Here were the top 20 best selling games in the US in the month of October:
- Call of Duty: Black Ops IIII^

In terms of hardware the PlayStation 4 was the top selling platform in October in both units and dollar sales. Not only that but it was the best October ever for the PS4 and the highest mark for any PlayStation hardware platform in the month of October since the PlayStation 2 in October 2002.
Overall it’s great to see the video game industry doing well all around. What are your predictions for the November NPD results? Let us know in the comments.
