The July 2019 NPD report for the US video game market is in and we have all the details about what the top selling hardware and software for the month were.
Total spending for the month reached $762 million which was flat when compared to $759 million the market made in July 2018. Hardware spending was down a lot this past month coming in at $169 million which is down 22% when compared to $217 million in July 2018. Software spending across consoles and PC was $340 million which was up 34% from $253 million in July 2018.
The Nintendo Switch was once again the best selling hardware for the month of July 2019 both in unit sales and dollar sales.
The software charts for July show that Nintendo had a very successful month with six of the top ten games being Nintendo published games. Despite that, the No.1 seller for the month was EA’s Madden NFL 20 which makes this the 20th consecutive year that Madden has been the best selling game of the month it released in. It also is now the eighth best selling game of 2019.
The second best selling game of the month was Fire Emblem: Three Houses and it’s worth noting this is without digital sales being included. This is the largest launch of a Fire Emblem game in U.S. history as its launch month sales were triple those of the previous best-selling entry which was Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia. It is also the second best-selling game in the franchise in lifetime sales trailing only Fire Emblem: Awakening.
