Guide: How to Get Faster Xbox Internet Speeds and Reduce Lag by Changing DNS Settings

For online gamers, there’s perhaps no bigger bane to our gaming lives than lag and slow internet speeds. The difference between a smooth online gaming experience and a lagging one can come down to fine margins.

Whether you’re playing FIFA, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, Call of Duty Warzone, Overwatch, Battlefield, Fortnite, Apex Legends, Rocket League or more, here’s a guide to get faster Xbox One internet speeds and reduce in-game lag by changing your DNS Settings on your Xbox One.

Step One:

Press the Xbox button on your controller to bring up the guide and from there go to System > Settings on the menu.

Step Two:

From the Settings, click on the following series of buttons Network > Network Settings > Advanced Settings.

Step Three:

This screen will display your Xbox’s current network information like IP, MAC address, and DNS addresses. Choose DNS Settings > Manual.

Step Four:

Use the onscreen keyboard to type in the primary and secondary DNS server you wish to use. You can find our guide on the fastest DNS servers for online gaming here.

Step Five:

Test your internet connection speed as well as your latency by returning to the Network screen and performing a Detailed Network Statistics test, it only takes a few seconds to give you the updated stats which should let you know if your Xbox One is faster. Less latency means less lag.

You may need to test a few DNS Servers to find the best match for your ISP. If you own a PS4 too, you can find our PS4 guide on improving network speed and reducing lag here.
