Take-Two Interactive has officially confirmed the launch of WWE 2K23 in the fiscal year ending 2023.
Take-Two, the official publisher of the WWE 2K video game series, has recently issued its quarterly earnings, and the report was the first confirmation that the WWE 2K23 video game will be released in 2023. According to the report, the recent WWE 2K22 video game was one of the largest contributors to their increased GAAP net revenue. It was also mentioned that WWE 2K22 contributed to the company’s $1 billion in units sold for Q1 2022.
The platforms for the anticipated WWE 2K23 have not been confirmed, with many expecting last-gen platforms like Xbox and PlayStation consoles along with PC to be the usual release mediums. WWE 2K22 was released on March 11, 2022, for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S. It recorded a 390% increase in digital launch sales from the previously released WWE 2K20 video game. Take-Two Interactive label, 2K Sports, has been the official publisher of the WWE video games for years, maintaining a strong collaborative relationship with WWE. However, the underwhelming success and poor reception of WWE 2K20 resulted in WWE reportedly seeking out EA to design future games instead of 2K Sports, with 2K Sports having one last chance to restore the series to its former glory.
2K Sports went back to the drawing board to completely reinvent their strategy. With the cancelation of WWE 2K21, 2K Sports gave developers Visual Concepts more time to work on the creative elements of 2K22. The results spoke for themselves, as the new WWE 2K22 was miles ahead of the previous release with simplified gameplay mechanics, stunning graphics, and easily accessible features. The game garnered significantly positive reviews and was wholeheartedly embraced by fans as one of the best wrestling video games in years.
WWE or World Wrestling Entertainment continues to remain the most popular and successful professional wrestling promotion in the world. It has established a loyal fan following over the decades with consistently high television ratings and an imposing social media presence. It has promoted some of the most popular wrestlers like Dwayne Johnson, Hulk Hogan, and Steve Austin as well as featured iconic matches and moments in the history of sports entertainment. With elements of epic action, thrilling drama, larger-than-life characters, and storylines of love, betrayal, and redemption, WWE and the games inspired by it are big on entertainment. In recent years, we’ve witnessed this even more, most notably in the form of movies based on wrestling characters, such as The Condemned 2, as well as iGaming hits like WWE Legends Link & Win by Microgaming, a highly established developer responsible for many games at top-rated mobile casinos.
With massive improvements to the core gameplay, WWE 2K22 reintroduced many fan-favorite features, including story mode, exhibition mode, and create mode, which allows players to create customized wrestlers. 2K22 also reinstated the much-admired GM mode to the WWE franchise and announced a feature called “My Faction,” which enables users to create a dream faction of wrestlers to rival legendary ones like the NWO and Degeneration-X. Stephanie McMahon, WWE’s new Chairwoman and Co-CEO, praised the previously released WWE 2K22 and commented,
“After taking a little more than a year off to improve the game engine, we worked hand in glove with our partners at Take-Two Interactive, listened to our customers and fans, and earned back their trust by delivering a game that exceeded their expectations. WWE 2K22 was a commercial and critical success with the highest Metacritic scores on both Xbox and PlayStation platforms in franchise history.”
The WWE 2K series has all the exciting aspects of WWE with spectacular wrestler entrances, hard-hitting theme songs, flashing lights, and special effects. WWE 2K has successfully recreated the “Demon King” entrance of former Universal Champion Finn Balor and has reintroduced a number of veteran wrestlers in the game’s roster, including recently retired champions like Edge and ‘Stone Cold’ Steve Austin from the Attitude Era to classic wrestlers such as The Fabulous Freebirds and Macho Man Randy Savage to 1980s icons like Ricky “The Dragon” Steamboat or “Rowdy” Roddy Piper. The much-anticipated release of WWE 2K23 has fans bursting with excitement which just goes to show that WWE continues to dominate the sports entertainment industry.
